Understanding ALS: A Guide for Our Community

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. These nerve cells, called motor neurons, control voluntary muscle movement, including walking, talking, and swallowing. As ALS progresses, these motor neurons degenerate and die, leading to a loss of muscle control and eventually paralysis.
